Spanning 140 years from the Knysna goldfields to modern-day Johannesburg, Millwood is a South African family saga of murder, addiction and hard-won redemption. A literary crime novel about a generational curse – and a man who must choose between the bottle and the truth.

In 1876, on a remote claim in the forests above Knysna, English prospector Charles Osborne quarrels with Katjan, the Xhosa man who led him to gold. A single reckless act leaves Katjan dead and Charles haunted by a curse that echoes down the bloodline. Hyenas cry in the night. A family orchard rots from the inside.

Across the decades, in Germiston and Parkwood and the mine dumps of Johannesburg, the Osbornes learn to live with violence, silence and shame. Cedric drinks to forget what he has seen. Dorothy hides what she knows. Cousins Tom and Kevin grow up in the same shadow – one fuelled by running and ambition, the other drawn to speed, risk and the dark glamour of motorbikes.

In 2013, Tom gets the phone call he has dreaded all his life: Kevin has been found murdered in his own home.

Reeling from grief and guilt, Tom throws himself into a private investigation that pulls him into Johannesburg’s underbelly – pawn shops, bike auctions, a missing Norton Manx, corrupt deals and compromised policemen. The more he uncovers about Kevin’s death, the more the past begins to stalk him: the hyena, the orchard, the family stories no one will tell in daylight.

As the case drags on, Tom’s old companion – alcohol – stops being a comfort and becomes a noose. Soon he is fighting on two fronts: against whoever killed his cousin, and against the disease that is killing him. AA meetings, hospital wards, night runs through empty streets; a slow, painful climb back towards sobriety and the possibility of forgiveness.

Millwood is a layered, character-driven novel about generational trauma, addiction and recovery, set against the changing landscape of South Africa – from gold rush dreams to post-apartheid disillusionment. Part family saga, part psychological mystery, part story of spiritual reckoning, it will appeal to readers who enjoy literary crime, magical realism at the edges of everyday life, and novels that grapple honestly with the cost of survival.

For readers of South African literary fiction and family dramas with a dark heart – where meaning, endurance and redemption are fought for, not given.
